Carbon graphite
Carbon and graphite materials belong to the non-oxidic ceramics. The material structure can only be maintained by an additional bonding matrix, as graphite cannot be melted or sintered. Raw materials such as petroleum coke, pitch coke, carbon black or graphite with a defined grit size distribution are mixed with a thermoplastic bonding agent at an increased temperature. Pitch with a bituminous coal tar or petroleum basis and synthetic resins can also be considered here, these usually also converting to carbon in a subsequent thermal treatment step.
A change to electrographite created from carbon graphite through so-called graphitization (high-temperature treatment) is recommended for more sophisticated requirements involving electrical conductivity, thermal load resistance or purity.
