Metal graphite composites
The embedding of metals in the porous system of engineering graphite materials enables the considerable influencing of their electrical characteristics in particular. A broad range of different metals is available for this purpose, and these are either introduced in a powdered form during the ceramic process or subsequent impregnation of a porous body into which graphite is embedded. The most important metals include copper and silver, lead, antimony and numerous light metals such as aluminium.
This means that an optimum material is available for many applications where a high current density (railway technology and electroplating) or excellent spark suppression (automotive industry) are required. Light metal and graphite composites can be utilised if stiff requirements regarding a low specific weight must be simultaneously fulfilled.
